THU THU a brand with a point of difference

I have to come clean here THU THU is a brand I was not aware of until today, which surprises me as it’s flipping good.

They have a real interesting story behind the essence of it’s originality. I think you will agree although you can see a trend lead story in the collection but when I read more about their inspirations I saw a clear indication as to why the designs have a unique point of difference, which personally I sometimes find hard to spot in a lot of the fashion brands I see every day.

Find THU THU at Browns Focus, Matches and Harvey Nichols.

This is what they say…

THU THU IS THE LABEL OF DESIGNER THUY DUONG NGUYEN. BORN IN VIETNAM BEFORE MOVING TO GERMANY AT AN EARLY AGE, SHE HAS BEEN INFLUENCED BY TWO STRONG CULTURAL FORCES. HER DESIGNS EFFORTLESSLY UNITE WESTERN STYLE WITH THE CHARM AND INTRICACY OF THE FAR EAST, CREATING PIECES THAT ALIGN WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE YOUNG GENERATION. HANDCRAFTED VIETNAMESE EMBROIDERIES FEATURE IN INNOVATIVE FABRIC CONTRASTS, CREATING PIECES THAT EXUDE CONFIDENT FEMININITY AND LIGHTNESS OF BEING. IN EXPLORING THE AFFINITIES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL RURAL TEXTILES AND CONTEMPORARY CUTS, THU THU CONSTRUCTS A NEW URBAN AESTHETIC THAT CONTAINS ECHOES OF DISTANT PLACES AND OLDER TIMES.

BEYOND THE FABRIC    THE STRIKING FABRIC FEATURED IN THU THU DESIGN IS SOURCED FROM VINTAGE SKIRTS AND BLANKETS IN SAPA, A MOUNTAINOUS REGION IN NORTH VIETNAM. MADE BY WOMEN OF THE H’MONG ETHNIC GROUP WHEN A NEW BABY IS BORN, THEY TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMPLETE. THE FABRIC IS PRODUCED USING LOCALLY SOURCED NATURAL DYES SUCH AS BEESWAX AND INDIGO, CREATING LONG STRANDS WHICH ARE USED TO WEAVE SHORT CROSSES AND INTRICATE GEOMETRIC EMBROIDERIES. THESE SIT ALONGSIDE PANELS OF BLOCK COLOUR AND FLORAL PRINT TO PRODUCE PIECES THAT ARE IMPRESSIVE AND PLAYFUL, REFLECTING BOTH LOCAL TRADITION, A WOMAN’S CHARACTER AND THE WORLD AROUND HER.
